Our Family In Two Homes Workbook

January 19, 2021 By Stephanie Dobson

I’ve been using an innovative Workbook in both my legal & mediation practice called Our Family In Two Homes.  Separation and Divorce can be overwhelming to many families - most people have never embarked on this process and don't know where to get started.  There are 3 parts to the Workbook: Foundations of effective co-parenting – working on things like trust, communication, … [Read more...] about Our Family In Two Homes Workbook

The Importance of an Initial Consultation

January 12, 2021 By Stephanie Dobson

People often ask why they need to come in for an initial consultation.  They just have a question that will take “30 seconds” of my time to answer.  I often hear frustration on the other end of the phone when they are advised that they need to come in for a consultation to have the answer.  Well, it’s important that you understand the purpose of a consultation… as I see it. #1 – … [Read more...] about The Importance of an Initial Consultation

Using Technology to Improve your Co-Parenting Relationship

January 5, 2021 By Stephanie Dobson

My favourite topic! Technology! I thought I’d take an opportunity to write about how technology can be used to help separated and divorced co-parents to be more effective. First, let’s talk about co-parenting apps! I love to test out the various apps that are out there.  They’re a great way to compartmentalize your communication with your co-parent.  There’s tons of different ones – … [Read more...] about Using Technology to Improve your Co-Parenting Relationship

My Favourite Divorce Books

December 28, 2020 By Stephanie Dobson

I love to feature great books I’ve found to help parents to learn how to effectively transition into co-parenting from two homes.  It really is a skill that’s acquired; just like learning to drive, it’s important to start out your new journey with creating an effective foundation of positive and effective skills. Here’s my favourites – they are all pictured below: Explaining divorce to … [Read more...] about My Favourite Divorce Books

My Fav Co-Parenting Apps!

August 5, 2020 By Stephanie Dobson

Shout out to my very favourite co-parenting apps! When I help separating & divorcing families, I find that effective communication is the key to successful co-parenting.There's an app for that!I consistently discourage email, text, or verbal communication as the primary way to communicate, as these apps are a way to compartmentalize your co-parenting.These apps are like a "filing cabinet" for … [Read more...] about My Fav Co-Parenting Apps!

Virtual Lawyering and Mediating 101 – it’s amazing!

June 6, 2020 By Stephanie Dobson

Prior to COVID-19, I would say that my practice could be run 50% virtually.  Enter pandemic, and with a few changes to technology, all of a sudden I’ve been able to operate 100% virtually.  In fact, I’ve joked with my team that we could actually legitimately run our office from a beach in Mexico – although they laughed, then quickly realized that I wasn’t kidding! I made some changes … [Read more...] about Virtual Lawyering and Mediating 101 – it’s amazing!

Planning for Living Together – Questions to Contemplate

April 8, 2020 By Stephanie Dobson

signing a contract

Unmarried living together – very common these days! Planning for that cohabitation – less common, but probably one of the most important things you can do.  Whether you end up married or not, the law in many jurisdictions provides that once you’ve been living together for a certain period, your division of assets & debts / spousal support obligations / entitlements on separation or death … [Read more...] about Planning for Living Together – Questions to Contemplate

Amid this COVID-19 world pandemic, separated and divorced parents are still coping with trying their best to co-parent. I would be interested to know – has this pandemic crated more cooperation between you as parents or escalated matters? Be Flexible We have kids who are needing to self-isolate in one parent’s home for any given reason, and that is impacting the other parent’s time. How … [Read more...] about Divorced Co-Parenting During COVID-19
