We are always told that it’s important to focus on health and wellness, but in my view the more stress one has in their life, the more important such a focus will be. Let’s talk about divorce wellness in the context of separation and divorce.
What is divorce wellness?
Divorce wellness is the conscious focus on taking care of yourself during your separation or divorce process.
Sometimes people don’t realize the impact that a separation or divorce is having on their health and well-being.
There can be unhealthy habits that emerge or reemerge like excessive drinking, smoking, drug use, unhealthy eating, or sometimes people even stop their fitness routines.
It is so critical during this excessively stressful time in one’s life to make an extra effort to focus on self-care.
The more healthy you are on the inside, the better you’ll be able to parent or co-parent your children, remain productive at work, think logically about your options relating to your separation as you work with your divorce professional, remain a good social citizen, maintain healthy relationships with your support system, and a myriad of other benefits.
If a person wants to focus on divorce wellness, what kinds of things can they do?
The first thing to do to is to do a self-assessment – write down your answers to these things:
- What’s causing you stress?
- How much sleep are you getting at night? Do you feel it’s sufficient? What’s your ideal amount of sleep?
- Who is in your support system? Do you consider them to be supportive or toxic people? My e-learning community accessible through my website has a course called the “Spectator Gallery” which helps separating or divorcing people learn how to identify the difference between a supportive versus a toxic person, and to attract the supportive ones.
- How is your nutrition – is it balanced? Do you feel healthy?
- Do you have any bad habits that you feel that you want to curb?
- What’s your exercise regime?
Once you’ve assessed where you’re currently at, identify what you’d like to improve upon:
- What reduces your stress?
- What improvements would you like to make to your daily routine, or what would you want to cut out?
- When you feel healthy, what does that look like for you?
- Could you use someone to talk with? It’s very important to reach out to get the help that you need – it may be nutrition advice or an exercise push, or calling on the supportive people in your life, or even seeking professional help. Whatever you feel that is lacking or needing improvement, don’t hesitate to reach out to those who can help you.
Why is divorce wellness so important?
Divorce is arguably one of the most stressful times in a person’s life, and with stress comes a heightened awareness of the importance of counterbalancing that with a focus on wellness.
The stress of a divorce can get away from you so quickly –
- having to juggle learning to be on with the kids 100% without assistance while they’re with you
- organizing life
- possibly moving residences
- if you haven’t been working outside the home or if you have only worked part-time you may be looking to increase your work hours
- managing your friendships and family relationships which may be changing
It’s a lot to deal with in a short amount of time. Add onto that hiring a divorce professional and working with them to gather documents and make plans for the future, it can be overwhelming to say the least.
Along with any stressful situation, it becomes ever more important to focus on health and wellness to get through.
